No fewer than 18 people were believed to have lost their lives yesterday, Sunday 18th March, 2018 in an accident that involved a Ford Explorer jeep and a Mazda bus at Alapako area on the Lagos /Ibadan Expressway.
The accident which occurred at 6:30 pm was caused by reckless overtaking on the part of the Mazda bus which led to a head-on collision with the Jeep.
Operatives of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were heavily deployed to the scene to help curb traffic as well as clear obstructions caused as a result of the accident.
Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer, Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), confirmed the accident.
“The accident involved 19 people, 18 people who were passengers in the bus lost their lives. However, the driver of the SUV, the only occupant in the jeep who happen to be coming from the opposite direction was seriously injured.”
The bodies of the victims were evacuated from the vehicle by the officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission to be deposited at the mortuary, and the driver of the SUV has been taken to the hospital for treatment.
“The vehicles have been taken to Alapako police station.” He said
