A gang of robbers from Benin Republic have been paraded by the Nigerian Police, they were arrested for allegedly stealing vehicles in Lagos and selling them off to a dealer in their country. The group which consisted of four robbers including a Herbalist who identified himself as Rasheed Akinola were paraded, he said his job was to prepare charms for them and help them in smuggling guns into Nigeria.
The Bandits confessed to a series of car theft following quite a number of Car hijacking from Lagos Mainland to the Island where they carry out most of their operations due to Exotic Cars being used by the Residents.
“We dey collect motor for Okota, Third Mainland Bridge, Victoria Island and Ajah area. Dose Island people dey drive big big motor. The motor wey we dey collect na Toyota Hilux, Prado Jeep, Honda Pilot and any big motor….” One of the robbers who identified himself as Hammed Ajagba said.
The Commissioner of Police told News Correspondents that the bandits attacked Couples who were either lost in conversations or parked somewhere to buy stuffs.
“They attacked a couple (Engr & Mrs. Onwudi) who were parked by the roadside opposite Southern Sun Hotel to buy barbecued meat. As they wanted to enter their vehicle (Toyota Prado) to continue their journey, the gang reportedly ordered them to the back seat at gunpoint and drove off.”
The Robbers abandoned a Jeep at Babatunde Crescent, Oniru, VI after they suspected it to have a tracking device and took another to Cotonou, Benin Republic, where it was reportedly sold to the dealer, identified as Benoit.
The robbers, however, met their Waterloo on February 11 in an uncoordinated operation. They were intercepted by Undercover Operatives at Mile 2, along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway while planning to snatch another Car.
“The suspects confessed to a series of robberies during which exotic cars were snatched at gunpoints. They also confessed that Engr. Onwudi’s Jeep is in Cotonou. One AK-49 rifle with serial number PE-2473; 43 AK-49 pieces of live ammunition; one locally-made cut-to-size double-barrelled gun; six live cartridges; one number plate: JD 697 KJA and assorted charms were recovered from the suspects.”
