Local Car News #Update
A 21-year-old university student identified as Opemiposi Okunuga, has been on thursday brought before the Ikeja Magistrate court.
Opeyemi, who has been allegedly accused of theft was believed to have stolen his neighbour’s car and resold it for N120,000
The Police Officer in charge of the case, Sgt. Godwin Awase, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 1 at his residence, stealing a car (with it’s value not yet ascertained) belonging to the complainant, his neighbour; Mr Ola Oladipupo.
The complainant parked his car in the compound and the accused was believed to have towed it overnight to an unknown location, Awase allegedly reported.
“The complainant discovered in the morning that his Mazda car was missing from where it was parked. It was after he raised alarm that a neighbour told him he saw the accused (Opemiposi) towing the car away from the compound,” he said
Awase said the complainant reported the case at the Police Station to which the accused has been arrested and detained to that effect. According to him, the accused has made a confessional statement to the police, saying that he sold the car for N120,000 at Abule-Egba and all efforts to trace the buyer has proved abortive.
The offence contravened Section 287 (5b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised) which stipulates a seven-year imprisonment for offenders.
In her ruling, to which the offender pleaded not guilty, the Magistrate, Mrs F.F. George, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
George said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until May 23.
