Toronto Police have confirmed the death of 10 people and 15 people injured after a white van hit pedestrians in Toronto. The collision occurred at a busy intersection, it was said that the white rental van had repeatedly mounted the pavement, running into people. The van fled the scene after the incident, at the intersection of Yonge Street and Finch Avenue in Toronto.

A video shows pedestrians aiding at least one of the victims and pointing the directions of the van to a passing police car. “It ran over a pedestrian trying to cross the street before it climbed the pavement to attack others. One by one, Holy God, I’ve never seen such a sight before. I feel sick.” said a witness who identified himself as Ali.

The driver’s actions, according to Toronto police chief, Mark Saunders, appeared intentional, but did not seem to have been an act of terrorism. “The city is safe,”  he said.

The driver, who was identified as Alek Minassian, 25, is now in custody after initially refusing to surrender. The bodies of the dead and injured, some covered by orange tarps, lay on a broad sidewalk that was scattered with debris, including a child’s stroller.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted from Ottawa: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by the terrible incident at Yonge and Finch in Toronto.”

“Thank you to the first responders working at the scene – we’re monitoring the situation closely.”
